A product of the New York City public schools, Trina Lynn Yearwood received her B.A. in Africana Studies and English from Brooklyn College, her M.Ed. in Education from Cambridge College, and her doctorate in Educational Leadership from West Virginia University where she was a Chancellor’s Scholar. As a child, Dr. Yearwood always knew that she wanted to be an educator and start her own non-profit organization—achieving those goals are two of her greatest accomplishments, thus far. Dr. Yearwood began her career in education as a Teacher of English with the New York City Board of Education. She is currently the Accreditation Manager for the Brooklyn College School of Education as well as the Director of the School’s Teacher Opportunity Corps program. Dr. Yearwood’s research and teaching interests are teacher preparation, cultural competence, culturally relevant teaching, urban education, and Black student success. As an emerging scholar, her work has been published in the Journal of General Education and in an anthology entitled (Re)Teaching Trayvon: Education for Racial Justice and Human Freedom. Dr. Yearwood’s research and work on culture in education have made her a sought-after speaker and has earned her invitations to speak at the United Nations as well as serve UNESCO’s Center for Global Education as an advisory committee member. Dr. Yearwood is the Founder of Operation CAVE (Campaign to Annihilate Violence Everywhere), a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering young people to make positive life choices through the arts, and Teachers Ready to Educate, Advocate and Transform (TREAT), an organization dedicated to providing professional development to enhance teaching and support student learning. Because of her commitment to equity in education for all students, she was the recipient of the 2015 Association of Black Educators of New York’s (ABENY) “Woman of the Year” award. Dr. Yearwood received East New York United Concerned Citizens, Incorporated’s Beacon of Hope Award in 2017 and is the recipient of Congresswoman Yvette Clarke’s 2018 Shining Star Award. Dr. Yearwood is a diamond life member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, and proudly serves her sorority and community as the president of the Delta Alpha Zeta chapter in Brooklyn, New York.
