Loving the Self is the greatest gift you can give to yourself. When you love yourself, you are loving the Divinity within you. Whether you believe in a God of your own understanding or not, it is this Life Force that moves through you and keeps you alive through the breath. It is this unseen Presence that supports you with a beating heart. It is this Divine Intelligence that makes each present moment sacred. This is your timeless and eternal Self. When you have had your own personal experience with this omnipotent energy, you will begin to love yourself unconditionally through each stage of your life for their lessons and their beauty. Understanding that this power loves you, created you in its own image, and always wants to see you survive but most importantly thrive, you will begin to feel a peace that transcends the conditions of your life.
You will understand that you have the power to make a conscious choice to be liberated from the daily conditions of stress, worry, sickness, overwhelm, hate, grief, lack, unforgiveness, depression, trauma, race, politics and even a pandemic. This conscious choice is a spiritual path, where you are no longer narrowly defined by these external conditions. That eternal part of you that never dies and is always whispering for you to return home. The irony of this magnificent experience we call life is that we don’t have to wait for death to find peace, we can find it by rediscovering our inner beauty, our soul.
In recent years, the zeitgeist of self-love has become an ordinary part of the mainstream conversation around women learning to take care of themselves, but this needs to extend to all Beings, binary and non-binary. In my humble opinion, the simplest way to create a world in which humanity is compassionate, accepting and loving is to have human beings who are emotionally and mentally healed. I propose we start with Self-love.
One of my greatest mentors on the philosophy of Self-love was Louise Hay. She has written countless books on the topic, my favorite is “You Can Heal Your Life”. I would like to share Louis Hay’s top six rules on how to love yourselves.
Stop All Criticism – for anything and stop criticizing other people. Accept yourself as you are right here and right now. If you change yourself lovingly, the change will be positive but if you change yourself negatively, the change will be negative.
Stop Scaring Yourself – How often do you choose to think thoughts that literally terrify you? Become the witness of your thoughts and replace a negative thought with a positive one. Train your mind to be optimistic.
Be Patient, Kind, and Gentle – don’t expect yourself to learn it all in one day. You are doing the best you can with the understanding and awareness that you have right now. Self-compassion is key.
Praise Yourself, A lot– become your own cheerleader. If you can find more persons to add to your squad, even better!
Support Yourself – in what you are doing. Learn how to ask for help if it’s difficult for you.
Take Care of Your Body – Before you eat, ask yourself, what am I hungry for? It may be food or an emotional need. Give attention to what energizes your body and learn about good nutrition.
Remember, it can’t be a new year, if nothing changes. Happy New You in 2022! Cheers to more love!
